Born in 1955 in the northeast Brazilian city of Natal, Luiz Lima had taught himself to play the guitar by the time he was eight. Four years later he was playing in bands throughout his native city and had adopted the nickname "Lóla", by which he is still known to many.
Traveling to the U.S.A. in the early '70s as an exchange student, Luiz attended and graduated from an American high school.
He went on to study music at the University of Maine in Augusta, well known for its pioneering music curriculum.
His two years in the United States gave Luiz intimate exposure to folk, hard, psychodelic, progressive and jazz rock patterns.

Upon his return to Brazil it was the music of Milton Nascimento and Egberto Gismonti that led Luiz back to his Brazilian roots.
There began his search through study, writing and improvisation for one form that incorporated those american elements with typical native brazilian rhythms and style.

Luiz Lima's first recording, "Revolta dos Peixes" was released in Sao Paulo in 1981.
Three years later two songs were included in "1984 Rock" released by Ariola.
1986 brought "Solar", progressive rock fusion music arising from Luiz' experiences at the music college of the University of Rio de Janeiro.
After two years studying jazz harmony and improvisation with Sergio Benevenuto in Rio de Janeiro, Luiz left his beloved Brazil once again.
This time he was pleased to perform in Brazilian night clubs in Rome, Italy. He produced in 1993 the CD "Olho Magico" in collaboration with Roman performer Oric Zaccar.
His 1996 "Brasil Brasileiro" contained original work along with standard Brazilian pieces.

At the present Luiz Lima is located in Florence, Italy, where he teaches at Centro Attività Musicale of Empoli (Fi).
